International Nurses Day

Celebrating Our Nurses: The Heart of Home Care

Every year on May 12, the world celebrates International Nurses Day, honouring the incredible contributions nurses make to health and care, marking the birthday of Florence Nightingale.

At Burnie Brae, we’re proud to have a dedicated team of nurses who embody the spirit of compassionate care. Our Home Care Packages team - Dee, Marvi, Vivian and Annie - work tirelessly behind the scenes, making a significant impact on the lives of those they care for.

We’re shining a light on these amazing nurses and sharing their reflections on the meaningful work they do every day in aged care.

This year, we sat down with a few of our team members to hear their thoughts on what it means to be a nurse in aged care — and what they’ve learned along the way.

Dee: “Aged care changed how I see everything.”

When Dee first started working in aged care, it completely reshaped her perspective on what it means to care for others.

“In nursing school, we worked with patients of different ages, most of whom could still help themselves. But in aged care, I saw people completely dependent on others — and that changed the way I approached care.”

While her clinical work is vital, Dee says some of the most powerful moments come from simply being there for someone.

“What people don’t often see is the listening — giving clients the space to express their deepest concerns. Sometimes, just having a conversation is what makes the biggest difference.”

To Dee, true care is holistic.

“It’s about tackling challenges with the client, not just for them. Working together to find solutions that truly fit their lives.”

Her experience in aged care has also brought a renewed appreciation for the everyday.

“I’ve become more patient and grateful — even for simple things like walking, showering, or driving. This role has given me a more positive perspective on life.”

Annie: “It’s not always what you do - it’s how you make people feel.”

For Annie, there wasn’t one single moment that defined her journey — but rather many small ones that built over time.

“It’s the little things - the conversations, the trust you build, the smiles. Those are the moments that taught me it’s not always about what you do for someone, but how you make them feel that has the biggest impact.”

One of the lesser-seen parts of Annie’s role is using her clinical insight to see the whole picture.

“You might be dressing a wound, but you’re also asking about diet, lifestyle, mobility, and other health factors. That broader view is what helps people heal - not just physically, but holistically.”

To Annie, care goes far beyond medicine.

“It means giving people the time to share their stories. That builds trust and confidence and it’s just as important as any treatment.”

And working in aged care has made a lasting impression on her.

“It’s made me grateful to be part of a community that supports and values its members.”

Vivian: “It’s about presence, not just procedures.”

One experience early in Vivian’s career changed everything.

“There was a resident who never had visitors. I sat with them - no treatments, no checklists - we just talked and held hands. That moment reminded me that care isn’t always about clinical tasks. Sometimes, it’s just about being there.”

Vivian also highlights the behind-the-scenes work that makes a huge difference.

“A lot of what we do - advocating for clients, liaising with families and other professionals, spotting early warning signs. It’s not always visible, but it’s crucial to quality care.”

Day to day, care for Vivian is rooted in connection.

“It’s listening without rushing. It’s noticing when something feels off and following up. It’s bringing dignity and joy into small, everyday moments.”

And just like her colleagues, Vivian says aged care has shaped who she is.

“It’s made me more patient, more compassionate, and more thankful. I’ve learned so much from the resilience and wisdom of the people I care for. It’s shaped me not just as a nurse - but as a person.”
