Neville’s Secret to Staying Active & Living Well

From marathons to music, Neville shows how staying active, social and having fun helps you live well at any age.

A former marathon runner with a best time of 3 hours 15 minutes, Neville, now in his 90s, walks daily with the support of a walker. Despite health conditions, he recently set a personal best on the treadmill - one kilometre in 16 minutes.

“I feel good after exercising - like I’ve really achieved something,” says Neville. “And I always treat myself to a frappe afterward!”

Neville works closely with Burnie Brae Exercise Physiologist Lachlan, who says his consistency is inspiring:

“He’s incredibly motivated. It’s rare to see that level of dedication at his age. He never wants to slow down!”

Neville’s energy isn’t just physical - it’s musical too. A proud member of Burnie Brae’s singing and choir groups, he’s often heard humming or singing during his workouts, lifting the spirits of everyone in the gym.

“I come every week to keep my mind active and my body moving,” he shares. “The exercise physiologists here are so caring - there’s nothing else like this.”

Lachlan, who’s currently training for the Bridge to Brisbane, says Neville inspires him too.

“If there’s one exercise everyone can do, it’s walking. Neville proves that - he shows up every week and gives it everything. He’s improved and maintained his strength and walking ability.”

Support at Home and in the Community

Neville receives coordinated support through his Home Care Package, including help with cleaning, shopping, and transport. He also attends Club Respite, which offers meaningful social connection and activities in a safe, welcoming environment.

His wife Nadja is his primary carer and drives him to his appointments and activities at Burnie Brae. She speaks warmly about the care they receive:

“Burnie Brae is a big part of our life. We’re lucky to have Alice as our Care Partner - she’s wonderful!”

Nadja is also a member of Healthy Connections. After trying a fitness class herself, she decided to take the next step and booked an assessment for a tailored exercise program.

“They are so caring here - the exercise physiologists. There’s nothing like this anywhere.”

Neville’s story is a perfect example of how staying active, social and engaged can help you live well at any age.
