Falls Prevention: Stay Steady, Safe & Independent

April is Falls Awareness Month – a timely reminder that falling isn’t just something that “comes with age.” While it’s true that the risk of falling increases as we get older, many falls can be prevented with the right support, knowledge, and lifestyle choices.

Each year, 1 in 4 Australians over 65 will experience a fall. These incidents can lead to serious injuries, hospitalisation, and a loss of confidence. But it doesn’t have to be this way.

With simple steps - like building strength and balance through tailored exercise - you can reduce your fall risk by nearly 25% and stay active and independent for longer.

What Causes Falls?

Falls can happen for many reasons, including:

  • Muscle weakness or poor balance

  • Vision changes

  • Hazards at home (like loose rugs or poor lighting)

  • Medications or medical conditions

  • Lack of confidence after a previous fall

Often, it’s a combination of these factors. But the good news is: they’re all manageable.

How Can Exercise Help?

Regular movement is one of the best ways to reduce your risk of falling.

Exercise helps to:

  • Improve muscle strength, especially in the legs and core

  • Boost balance and coordination

  • Increase flexibility and reaction time

  • Enhance confidence in movement, reducing fear of falling

Even light activity, when done consistently and safely, can make a big difference.
