International Women’s Day: Balancing the Scale in Healthcare

Written by Lauren, Physiotherapist | Healthy Connections

In recognition of International Women’s Day, our Physiotherapist Lauren reflects on this year’s theme, Balance the Scale, and what it means for women’s healthcare - particularly for women navigating midlife and beyond.

This is both a celebration of progress and a call to continue creating spaces where women feel safe, heard and empowered in their health journey.

International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on progress, but also on what still needs to change. This year’s theme, Balance the Scale, reminds us that women and girls deserve safety, to be heard and the freedom to shape their own futures. In healthcare, that message is especially powerful.

The Reality for Many Women

For many women over 50, healthcare has not always felt balanced. Some grew up in times when discussing pelvic health, pain, menopause, or mental wellbeing was considered inappropriate. Others have experienced their symptoms being dismissed as “just ageing.”

According to the World Health Organisation, gender disparities in healthcare access and outcomes remain a global issue, and older women are often among the most affected.

Feeling Safe, Heard & Respected

As physiotherapists, we see firsthand how important it is that every woman feels safe, listened to, and respected. Whether you are seeking help for joint pain, balance issues, continence concerns, or recovery after surgery, your experiences are valid.

You have the right to ask questions, to understand your treatment options, and to be involved in decisions about your body.

What Balancing the Scale Means in Practice

Balancing the scale in healthcare means creating a space free from judgement - at every age. It means recognising that strength does not diminish with the years, and that improvement is possible whether you are 25 or 85.

It means acknowledging your life experience and tailoring care to your goals, whether that is walking confidently, playing with grandchildren, travelling, or simply moving without pain.

Our Commitment

On this International Women’s Day, we reaffirm our commitment: every woman who walks through our clinic doors deserves to feel safe, heard, and empowered.

Your health matters.
Your voice matters.
And your future - at any age - is still yours to shape.
