Assistive Technology
This help can make everyday life easier if you’ve had a fall or near miss, feel less steady on your feet, find stairs or the bathroom harder to manage, use a walking aid or wheelchair, or are returning home after a hospital stay. It’s all about helping you stay independent at home for as long as possible.
Did you know? You may be able to access funding for assistive technology and home modifications before your Support at Home services start, helping address urgent safety needs sooner.
Simple additions around the home can improve safety and reduce the risk of falls. Supports may include grab rails, handrails, bathroom safety equipment, non-slip solutions and improved lighting.
Assistive technology can support independence with everyday tasks. This may include walking aids, mobility equipment, wheelchairs, shower chairs and toileting supports. These items can also assist with recovery and make returning home from hospital safer and more comfortable.
Home modifications improve accessibility and make it easier to move safely around your home. This may include ramps, entry adjustments and other changes that support safe and independent living, including after changes in mobility, illness or injury.
FAQs
Assistive technology and home modifications (AT-HM) includes equipment and devices that help you complete everyday activities more safely and independently. Home modifications involve changes to your home environment that improve accessibility, mobility and safety.
You may benefit from assistive technology or home modifications if you:
The earlier safety concerns are addressed, the easier it can be to maintain independence and reduce the risk of injury.
Funding for assistive technology and home modifications is available through the Support at Home program for eligible older Australians.
Assistive technology and home modifications are funded through a dedicated funding pathway under the Support at Home program.
Unlike many ongoing Support at Home services, assistive technology and home modifications are funded separately from your regular care budget. This means eligible participants may be able to access equipment and modifications without reducing the funding available for their ongoing care services.
Funding is allocated based on your assessed needs and may include:
Funding amounts are correct as of 1 July 2026 and may be subject to change (for the latest info, visit My Aged Care). Funding generally lasts for 12 months, with extensions available in some circumstances.
Assistive technology and home modifications are classified as Independence Supports, which means a participant contribution may apply based on income and assets. Clinical assessments and prescriptions remain fully government funded.
To access funding for assistive technology and home modifications, you'll need to complete an aged care assessment through My Aged Care (apply online or call 1800 200 422).
During your assessment, your assessor will determine whether assistive technology, home modifications, or both are needed to support your safety, mobility and independence at home. If approved, these supports will be included in your support plan and Notice of Decision.
Funding is separate from your regular Support at Home services, meaning you may be able to access equipment and modifications sooner without waiting for your ongoing service funding.
Please note: Funding is based on assessed need and priority level (Immediate to Standard). Wait times vary depending on your priority group and support type.
If you have been approved for Support at Home and assistive technology/home modifications, funding will be allocated based on your assessed needs and priority level.
If you were not approved for assistive technology or home modifications, you may need to request a reassessment or support plan review with My Aged Care.
If you’re not eligible for funding, waiting for your Support at Home assessment, or prefer not to use government funding, you can purchase equipment or arrange home modifications privately. Our team can help you explore options and find the right supports for your needs.
You may also be able to access some similar types of support through programs such as the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) and Home Assist Secure (HAS), but these are separate schemes with different eligibility requirements, funding levels, and what they cover.
Depending on your needs, assessment outcomes and home environment, home modifications may include:
All home modifications are subject to assessment and approval based on individual needs and eligibility requirements.
If you'd like to learn more about assistive technology, home modifications or available funding, we're here to help. Contact our friendly team to discuss your needs and find out how we can support you to stay safe, independent and comfortable at home.
