Kia Kaha - Stay Strong!

Written by Marcelle, Healthy Connections Reception Team

Kia kaha is a beautiful Māori phrase meaning “stay strong” or “forever strong.” It’s often used as a message of encouragement and resilience - a reminder to stand tall through life’s challenges.

The words gained strength and meaning during World War II, when the 28th Māori Battalion marched to a song called Kia Kaha. Later, New Zealand band Split Enz gave it new life in their hit song of the same name - both celebrating courage, unity and endurance.

When I was asked to write a blog for Healthy Connections, I wasn’t quite sure what to say at first. Then I thought back to my youth in New Zealand, where sport was everywhere and I gave it all a go (though I mostly loved cheering from the sidelines!).

Exercise wasn’t always a big part of my adult life, but joining Healthy Connections changed that. Seeing so many older adults turning up - once, twice, even three times a week - inspired me to do the same. Now, I look forward to getting healthy and strong alongside them.

As I’ve grown older, I’ve realised how vital it is to stay strong - not just physically, but mentally and socially too. Regular movement helps our hearts, improves stamina and boosts mood through those wonderful “feel-good” chemicals. Best of all, it connects us with others and I’ve seen many friendships begin right here in the Healthy Connections gym.

It is important to exercise for strength, health and connection. Helping us to stay strong, resilient and healthy for a long active life.
