Join the Beanies for Feenie Movement

There’s something special about a simple beanie. It’s warm, practical, and made with care - but this winter, it’s also a way for communities to come together and support those doing it tough.

At Burnie Brae, our Craft & Chat group is proudly taking part in the Beanies for Feenie campaign - an initiative led by ABC Radio Brisbane in partnership with local fibre artists. The goal is simple: bring people together to create hundreds (even thousands!) of handmade beanies for those in need.

A Community Effort That Makes a Difference

Every beanie created through this campaign is donated to charities and outreach programs supporting people experiencing hardship, including homelessness and families in crisis.

And the impact is real - past efforts have seen thousands of handmade beanies and scarves distributed across Queensland, proving that even one small act can make a big difference.

Beanies are donated to incredible organisations including:

The Salvation Army

UnitingCare

GIVIT

What We’re Making and How You Can Help

We’re creating handmade beanies (and scarves too!) using new yarn. The campaign recommends:

  • Acrylic, nylon or polyester yarns for durability and easy care
  • 8 ply yarn (about 50–100g per beanie)
  • Textured yarns for extra warmth and personality

No experience? No problem. This is about giving it a go, learning something new, and enjoying the process.

More Than Just Knitting

Our weekly Craft & Chat sessions are just as much about connection as they are about creativity. There’s always a cuppa brewing, conversations flowing and plenty of support to help you along the way.

You can join the Beanies for Feenie project - or simply bring along your own knitting or crochet project and enjoy the social side of the group.

Join us on Tuesdays, 9:30am – 12pm in the Burnie Brae Hall (Activity Room)
at 60 Kuran St, Chermside. Cost is $5 for members. We have lots of spare yarn, needles, patterns and plenty of encouragement!

Can’t Make It?

You can still be part of the cause by donating handmade beanies or scarves. Drop them off at Burnie Brae Reception at 60 Kuran Street, Chermside and we’ll ensure they reach those who need them most.

So whether you join us for a chat, a stitch, or a shared laugh, you’re part of something bigger.
