Living Well with Parkinson’s: What the Research Says About Exercise

Being told you have Parkinson’s disease can stop you in your tracks. You might be wondering what life looks like from here, and whether there’s anything you can do to make a difference.

The answer, increasingly, is yes.

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological condition that affects movement, balance, and coordination. While there is no cure, a growing body of research is showing something encouraging: exercise (especially in the early stages) may do far more than just keep you fit.

Intensity matters more than you might think

In 2018, researchers followed 128 people in the early stages of Parkinson’s who were not yet on medication.

Those who exercised at high intensity (around 80–85% of maximum heart rate, four times per week) showed significantly better motor outcomes over six months compared to those receiving usual care. Importantly, this approach was also found to be safe.

While the training is intense, it’s not about pushing through pain. It’s about creating a strong enough stimulus for the brain and body to respond and adapt.

Supervised, structured exercise makes a real difference

Research comparing supervised group exercise with home-based programs shows that therapist-led exercise can lead to greater improvements in walking speed, balance confidence, and motivation.

A large review of 23 studies also found that group exercise significantly improves motor function and mobility compared to usual care. It can also support better long-term adherence, thanks to social connection and accountability.

Even once per week can make a meaningful difference if higher frequency isn’t possible.
